I know this has been a topic of discussion before, but thought I would do a new post. I am fairly confident that these granules are authentic, and were probably exchanged by SF mint for silver certificates. E-bay item no. follows: 252907625574*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

They appear to be casting shot from a jewelry supply store. Here are some Sterling Silver casting grains both regular and the no/low tarnish Sterling silver Here is what was given out for silver certs. I picked this bar up in the early 70's in California Eagle imprint on one side Troy ounce on the reverse. Also for some perspective here is a about a pound of Pewter casting grains. Some wire As you can see with the casting grains you have to have trust in your seller. As for buying from ebay with no assurance other than their word I wouldn't bite. There is enough scam and fake PM's on ebay with paper work.

TWO ounces sold for less than the going rate for ONE ounce of silver. The 2 oz sold for US $15.07. This price reflects apparent doubt by bidders worldwide that this is genuine silver. The seller, in my opinion, did not help themselves by providing no description of the product other than the title itself and a single photo.

I would avoid these type listings and purchase from a trusted bullion dealer. Check Provident or one of those type sellers for silver shot.

I have this. Pretty neat. Only about 10g though so it lost some over the years. Maybe it spilled at one point

Quote: Circus, I'm not doubting that the bar is silver, but the source below would indicate that it wasn't issued in exchange for certificates, per se I have no idea, As I picked it up in Caly in the early seventies at a dealer. He said that is what it is. Back then there wasn't as many scams as now. At the time he said that you got a bar for x/number of the certs I wasn't a coin collector then or now. It was for the mineral collection. My point was that the granules could be a number of metals with out knowing the sources. I Have seen one of those plastic boxes with the red lettering at the LCS for sale. And dealing with ebay it is a crap shot if some stuff is real or not

Yes. My original post did not make that clear.

Those pictures are not enough to tell if it's silver or not. With a good zoom-in I can tell you. Pure silver comes in "blobs", like really thick cornflakes. Sometimes the shot is in the shape of tiny cylinders, as in wire that had been cut into very small meltable pieces. The color should be starch white. I would pass on it since it did not come direct from a refiner. Anyone can melt metal into a water bucket and call it silver. Stay clear because a smart person would not have posted that online to sell, but sold to a refiner or someone else in the business.

Well, I just got my granules. The metal is very dense. It doesn't look like approx. 2 ounces, but I weighed it and it is (though not troy). There are nooks and crannies where the metal is still whitish.
