OK here I go,
please remember I have only just started with this coin collecting business so I'm sorry if the questions I ask have simple answers
where do I start?
i have this collection that my grandfather gave me, its all the coins from 1966 I have written down the ones that are missing (about 3 dozen) so where do I begin looking for them? do I just keep my eye out or should I buy them?
also how do I know if they were even made? I don't want to be looking for a coin that doesn't exist.
with my uncirculated coin sets I have been given, I have the year 2000 set, anyone know how much this is worth? I have no interest in selling but am just curious.
that will do 4 now!!
thanks

Information is what you need right now. The best places to get that initially is your local coin dealer, and from printed sources. A couple of books that you might look at are 'Australinan Coins and Banknots', by Greg McDonald, and the 'Renniks Australian Coin and Banknote Value'. I buy both every year. Most of your questions will be answered there. They will also help you determine in which direction you would like to take your collection. (You can probably find some old ones at your local library).
Also go back and read some of the posts on this board. There is a lot of good information and people here. Welcome to a new and exciting world.

The set for year 2000 is worth over $100 now.
As NEAesculus mentioned, the books are invaluable and have all the information in there. Greg McDonald's Pocket Guide to Australian Coins and Banknotes is great, has all the prices and mintage figures for every year. Everything you wanted to know and more.

You mentioned in your 1st thread you had the last 10 mint sets. 2000 is worth $120 in the latest catalogue, and all 10 sets about $630 if you were to go and buy them from a dealer, so keep them safe somewhere.

coin collecting really spans generations, its something that I enjoy not only because I find it interesting but it's something I can do with my father and we both enjoy it.

....and once you finish (you never will) the decimal coins, you can start on the pre-decimal coins, then bothe series of banknotes....then the world is at your feet.
Let us know if we can be of any help.
