My son and I came across this 1956 Jefferson nickel coin roll hunting last night and we were wondering if this was some type of improper alloy error or if was PMD (or maybe just some good ol' fashion dirt)? We would be very interested to find out your opinions and ask the best way we could tell if it was an alloy issue or not.
You guys have all been very helpful and we appreciate it!
Thanks so much for taking the time to post the info guys. Much appreciated. What would be the exact term for this type of error? I don't see much info on "improper alloy..." online, so I am guessing there might be a more common description of this type of thing? Are they pretty common or are they a bit hard to find in circulation? Thanks again.
I found this 1955 Jefferson a few rolls after the first and I wanted to know if you thought it was a similar improper alloy mix issue? The "lines" on the '55 look similar to the '56 I posted earlier, only less pronounced and they are more horizontal than diagonal.
Thanks again for all of the input. Much appreciated and very educational.
on the first one. The second looks to be roller lines but it also looks like there is a little more going on with the place that goes through the middle of the bust. It looks like either lamination or a die clash behind the head. Maybe the experts can give you a little more info.
I'm glad you posted these. I have a few I was thinking about posting. As far as die clash, I'm not seeing it,But It may have a strike through above the first O in Monticello.
