I grade it as counterfeit. Coins in 1799 did not have raised rims as they were not struck in collars and the denticles would go all the way to the edge. And what's going on with star #12?

Quote: I grade it as counterfeit. Can you explain what you find wrong with it. I don't necessarily disagree, I was looking for a marker one way or another. Wanted to know what you found.

Weight it - it should be 26.96 grams.

Also the lettering on the reverse looks off. I'd have to look up the die marriages of 1799 in Bolender to see if there is anything that looks like this. If not, thats another thing.

To address your point about rims and denticles- couldn't wear be responsible for that appearance? Hardly looks much worse off than this example graded F12 by PCGS with a green CAC sticker. I hope I am allowed to use that image.

It's probably genuine and looks around F15 or so. What does the edge lettering look like?

There is nowhere on that VF-30 coin where the denticles go to the edge. Also, the rim looks raised to me from the photos.

I vote counterfeit. Date, lettering and surfaces are all highly suspect.

Here's a genuine NGC certified 1799 $1 Irregular Date, 13 Stars Reverse, which is what the OP's coin appears to be.

Right. And compare the 13th stars.

Also notice the big pit between IB in LIBERTY.

I see what you guys are saying. It could be a quality die struck counterfeit. The areas in question could also be damage and/or image artifacts. Some high-resolution images would likely confirm what it is.
The volume of sharp detail on both surfaces is difficult to replicate but I agree that counterfeits are getting very good and this could be one. If I owned the coin I would have a professional view it in-hand since it's potentially a $1500 coin or a $1.50 fake.

The toning, corrosion or crud around the devices near the edge is similiar to what is seen on many Chinese counterfeits. Looks like the counterfeiter tried to remove some of it to give the coin a more plausible look. The overall color looks suspicious, too.

The rins, stars, and hair style all are evidence of this coin being fake.
