not quite a Cud but getting there you can't see it well but the broken piece of the die was starting to shify away from the rest of the die and is slightly elevated from the rest of the coin...very interesting piece. I share ownership of this piece with Apirix.

CCCS 1943 Tombac 5 cent piece, retained broken die

Pretty close, but at this stage of the variety the is known as a 'retained broken die'.

Would a large cent with a deep crack that passes across the middle of the reverse of a large cent "in an arc from rim to rim" be considered a Retained Cud ?.

...and does it belong here ?

I'm of the opinion that the appropriate answer is "technically, yes." Cuds (IMO) are subsets of the broader term "Broken Dies," and thedollarman and SPP-Ottawa's coins are at the ragged edge of the division past which "Broken Die" is the more descriptive - and more "important" numismatically - term.

In the interest of yet greater needless complication (), it might also devolve to whether or not a piece has completely departed any solid connection to the rest of the die, still in place or not. But if half the danged die is laying on the floor whilst the rest is still striking coins, is it just a "cud?"

Thanks for the "fine tuning" in this description..

I'm leaning on the "retained broken die" for this 58. It's a very tough die pair as I've only seen a pic of one other from Rob's book.

A Turner OB5/RB19..at 0 %..

Spotted this one in the 1971 publication of The Kayak, Vol. 1, No. 8-9 (Aug-Sept), on page 118.

I don't know whose collection this coin resides in now, but it is almost as impressive as my 1937 die break and Cud.

Thanks. It would look a lot better if I got rid of the gunk. I'll work on that.

New addition for this thread...

Not one, but two Cuds on this 1907 NFLD cent.
