Given my previous post on the "bargain box" find of the 1953 NSF large date,
I wanted to follow up with a better coin showing the markers for quick ID.
It's really quite easy to spot once you know where to look. Keep in mind
there are different markers for the no shoulder fold and the large date, so
you'll need to look on both sides. I've included a full res pic to study.
Obverse: since it's pretty hard to discern between shoulder strap and
no shoulder strap varieties from the portrait, I look at the lettering on the obverse.
In particular, the "I" in DEI is noticeably flared on NSF and is a quick marker for ID (see arrow).
Reverse: I find the "large date" marker slightly more difficult, but if you follow a simple rule it's actually pretty easy.
If you compare the 9 in the date to the preceding 1, the large date 9 extends noticeably further past
the halfway point from the 1 to the rim. While the 5 and 3 also extend further to the rim,
I think the 9 is the most dramatic and easiest by far to compare to the 1. That's it--good luck!
