I want this coin more than I should. I am suspicious of the obverse toning. My fear is it has been artificially toned to hide flaws. Any opinions? Image: 1807bre.jpg24.81 KB Image: 1807bob.jpg24.28 KB

First off, that looks like a scan. The color can be off in a scan. Next, I really don't like that light area in front of Liberty. Looks like someone started to clean her. Having said that....it also looks like old leather purse toning, it is almost always dark, and yes, it can hide a bunch of bad stuff......If the price was right, I would take a chance to see her in hand as long as I could return her if I needed to.....

Something doesn't look right. I would pass and wait for another. Haste makes waste.

It's always hard to tell from a computer image, but I would say it was cleaned and then a substance added (like smoke). I can't recall ever seeing a natural rust colored bust half. Too bad - it looks like a decent strike and good detail - especially for an '07. It's still a nice coin and you could remove whatever is on there and let it re-tone naturally.

Although certainly not my area of expertise, I really don't like the look of the obverse. As Becky said, the untoned area in front of the portrait raises enough suspicion to pass on this piece. Any chance of a real picture of the coin? It's tough to tell much from a scan, and that's a pretty poor one at that.

This is the only image I have, from the site, and the only time I've ever considered buying an ungraded coin based on a photo. Thanks for the good advice.

The reverse looks dry-rubbed clean.

Not to start up the counterfeit topic again, but too often artificial toning can hide artifical coins. I have no idea on the authenticity of this coin, I would just be very careful to check all the details if anything looks fishy.
