It looks good to me.

These are hard for me to see on-screen. It makes me wonder how many have passed me by because I wasn't aware of their existence.

Fortunately, thanks to Crazyb0, I am a proud owner of a BB! If only an entire collection of Black Beauties could be assembled. It seems though, that the late 50's to the early 60's are the dates to look for.

I heard it's caused by cobalt remaining in the nickel that should have been smelted off.

Spruette this makes my second one I have found thanks to you finding the one you are talking about. The first time I ever heard of one was when you found yours. A whole collection would be cool to own. Maybe we need a post your black beauty thread and see if we can get a whole collection. My other is a 59.

To clarify, I've never found one. The one I have was sent to me by Crazyb0. That's probably what you're thinking of because he still has at least one discovered in nickel folders.

I do like your idea of a Black Beauty thread. I don't know if another exists at the moment. However, it seems that we'll be limited to a handful of years in which these were created. Still, it would be a cool topic.

Mine's a 1958. I'll have to get some good pics if I'm going to start a topic.

I read that anyone can make their own "black beauty" on any nickel coin kinda easily. Reading that made me lose interest in these unless it is slabbed by a trusted TPG.

Is there a clear way to distinguish environmental damage from a genuine sintered planchet error? The one above looks like environmental damage to me rather than a "Black Beauty".
Rest in Peace

Sœurette that's the one I was talking about.i found my first one a couple days afterwards. John where did you read the article I would be interested in reading that. Aristarchus I know very little about these but from what I have read if it's a true black beauty it will be in the date range around mid 50s to early 60s it will have no nickel showing and still have some mint luster. If it's environmental damage you will still see some nickel and it will not have any luster. That said I know of no other way to tell the difference.

I think I read it here on CCF. The only way I know of testing it is with an XRF tester.

No XRF needed in on an over annealed planchet, perhaps an improperly mixed. This is textbook, hold at an angle & nearly all devices are in 'black-out', with coal-like
surfaces.

You'll see irradecent blues, reds, & quite often on MS pieces, purples.

This example was given to me by our own T-bop. It's now the finest example I own.

You are right fioti. I got the wrong alloy mix confused with annealing.I have an alloy error that was confirmed by a CCF member using an XRF. I also recently bought a so called black beauty (1962) a short time ago and posted posted both of them.

Nice coins fioti and gr58 spruette is thinking about starting a thread "post your black beauties,"those are prime candidates for that thread. Thanks for the info on the way to distinguish these.

Topic created!

Hopefully, we can get more contributors than before. There seem to be quite a few genuine examples out there. I'm throwing myself out there for critique with mine (raw).
