Hi, I have the Geometry in Art collection, and noticed that the Maple Leaf coin in the set has some sort of streak or scratches on the obverse side. None of the other coins in the set have this. I am wondering how this occurs? And whether I should return the coin to The RCM for another one. For comparison, the top image is the obverse of the Polar Bear coin, and the bottom is the Maple Leaf coin. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Was the coin like this when you received it? Or did the streaks just appear?

If you're not happy with it by all means send it back.

Put it on ebay, it may sell for more than you bought it for. It looks the coin got stuck in a belt during frosting or polishing.

Return it to the Mint. Putting a defective coin on ebay is a waste of time because no one will buy it for issue price. It be different if it was an error coin which this one is not.

There are ebay buyers that would absolutely be interested in a unique Geometry in Art Woody.

While you could put it on ebay how do you prove that the streaks on the coin came as is from the Mint and you did not do it yourself?

It looks like nothing more than differential toning to me, as if someone lightly wiped it with a wet cloth or glove...

Quote: It looks like nothing more than differential toning to me, as if someone lightly wiped it with a wet cloth or glove... Very possible. I would say, someone tried to remove something with eraser. Not the best appearance of the coin. As MoneyPenney said - no prof that it came out Mint this way. To avoid headache, probably better to return this coin.

i think the mint only has a 30 day free return window. you may have to call a sales rep, and see what they can do..

Thank you everyone for your hypotheses and comments. I am not heavy into coin collecting or numismatics. I just purchase ones that appeal to me, which the Geometry in Art series does. Given that, I will hold on to this "defective" coin because the flaw does make an interesting effect when viewing the coin at certain angles of light. It causes a rainbow shimmer on the affected surface that is quite pleasing to me.
If anyone has further knowledge, then please let me know as I am curious to know the cause, and whether other coins struck at the same time as this one also have the same effect. For reference, the coin mintage is 4370/7500 according to the Certificate of Authenticity.
Thanks again for all feedback!

The pressman could have wiped the die and left some grease but they do not polish the struck coins, but being a NCLT there should be better quality control
