I REALLY do not think a genuine Sammy Marks gold Tickey would be downgraded to junk status!

To be fair, as far as official value is concerned, you can hardly get more junk than the Yugoslav 1 dinar 1994 (the only coin type of a currency that existed for 24 days before succumbing to hyperinflation). Yet as a coin it is rather collectible.

Never mind the assorted Zimbabwean, Hungarian and German (and various other) inflationary banknotes (also sent further into worthlessness soon after their arrival).

I do believe such a grading comes from commercial institutions like Standard & Poor's, Moody's and Fitch. Just the fact that they are a commercial party and thus earn money by selling grades means that there are people with interests, also in having specific grades for specific countries. They're not objective at all. I wouldn't sleep a second less tonight due to this and just enjoy the Rand while it lasts. And probably not re-elect Zuma next time, that also helps.

january1may,
I noticed there are two styles of coin that year. Are they both collectible?

@John1: In fact, Yugoslavia went through 6 different currencies between 1989 and 1994 (the years of the Balkan war, defining the end of Yugoslavia). I usually find those coins (of all 6 currencies) in junk bins here, sold by the kilogram.

I was referring to the 1 dinar, not the 1 novi dinar.

I think that Numista rarity 21 speaks for itself. It's not valuable, as such (a nice example costs about a dollar), but it's still worth a lot more that you'd expect from its sheer worthlessness as currency (even when it was made).
