Hi all,
I just got my commemorative type album, and was looking for coins to purchase. Aside from buying graded coins, how does everyone go about purchasing genuine problem free circulated coins. For example, a online coin shop I have used before lists several coins I am interested in in various grades . However there are no photos of coin just grade and price. Is this a risky way of getting my problem free coins? The shop is golden eagle and so far I have been happy with them, just wondering what everyone else does I guess . Thanks Tony

I suggest first becoming familiar with the coin(s) you are interested as far as what the difference is between XF and AU, and the spread of wear within each. Next I would contact the seller to see what his return policies are.
Rest in Peace

To CCF , I don't recommend buying coins sight unseen . I've done it in the past and refuse to buy again without seeing good photos of obverse and reverse . The only reputable coin dealer that I know of that does not show photos of coins is '' Jack H. Beymer Rare Coins''. With him you don't have to worry about getting inferior coins His prices aren't cheap ,but you get what you pay for . He has a tremendous inventory of Raw coins as well as slabbed .

Looking on ebay I am even more confused, how does I begin to tell which coins are real and not cleaned, very frustrating. Unfortunately I do not have a good local shop to go to.

120!

When I first started buying online I went straight to ebay.
Once I bought enough to learn what to look for I was VERY disappointed
in my purchases which even included a counterfeit coin.
A VERY good counterfeit...but still.

I hardly ever purchase raw coins online anymore.
I travel to different coin shows and do most of my buying there except for bullion coins.

Unfortunately there's no safe way to buy raw online. Even the big dealers have been known to pawn off cleaned coins as uncirculated at times.

It is not easy or even possible to detect a cleaned coin from an unknown seller on ebay. A bit back I was into Morgan dollars and bought a crapload of raw coins on ebay. Got some great coins and got a bunch of losers. What I did develop was finding a few sellers that were honest and accurate with their pics. From there I was off to the races.

Two of my raw Morgan successes:

1) bought a raw 1885 CC Morgan that looked great and it sold for chump change..NGC eventually graded it as MS 65 and I sold it for north of $800

2) saw a nice coin listed as a BU 1884 Morgan dollar and on examining the crappy reverse pic saw what looked like a "cc" under the eagle...I took a chance and got it for around $60 and it WAS a 1884-CC in BU condition probably MS64. Still have that one....

The fun is in the search....
