Appparently about 800,000 of them were minted, making them rarer than say the 1881. I have two of them, one in AU and one in EF.

Would you say they're one of the most common half eagles or are they a little better?

Slightly above average, maybe. PCGS has it at a pretty average value.

Not in terms of Liberty motto half eagles, where 70 out of 105 dates are rarer.

But look on the bright side. Only 2000 are estimated to exist. The 1909 S VDB cent has 50,000 survivors, sells for 2-3x as much, and isn't made of gold. What's not to like?

It is scarcer than say the 1881 but there are still plenty of them around compared to the number of people collecting Liberty head half eagles by date and mint.

800000 is a pretty high mintage, especially for gold.

1905-S is a common date.

Well, it's common in the sense of being a bullion coin in circulated grades, but in choice unc this brings quite a premium.

It might be a bullion coin in circulated grades, but it's sure nicer to own than a boring 1/4 ounce American Eagle! 8)
