New pickup from the Long Beach Expo today. I'm no expert on these, especially when the date is showing signs of wear and the grade starts plummeting on an otherwise solid coin. Also, the upper part of the S—what is this? I skimmed ebay and found a few other examples of '23 S's with this weird characteristic.   Edited by JoshsCoins 06/09/2017 01:46 am

vf30. 1917-1924 SLQs are graded mainly by the condition of the date because it was raised and the first thing to wear out. Yours has a nicely struck shield with nice rivets, but the date dictates the grade. Nice coin and

Rounded head and knee with a nice overall strike. I see little wear in this coin and think an XF-40 is appropriate. Nice coin. It looks like it has some hairlines though...Maybe from a light cleaning. It's hard to tell from the pictures.

Thanks for the feedback, everybody! I've been scouring ebay for certified 1917-1924 SLQ's to look at and compare, and I think if I sent it in I'd expect a 35.

XF-40 perhaps cleaned at one time. Always tough to find!
