Not certain but it may be a charm regarding good luck, abundance and or longevity.
If you could get a clear picture of that smaller rectangle, it could help.
It's really stylized and makes it harder for me to translate.
But their are young Chinese members here that will know at first glance.

Thanks! I believe the buyer ( a relative) bought them as a gold investment, but left behind no information.

Here's an update because I found your (up side down) stylized character on one side of a different piece in Bruce X# MB34, UWC 6th edition page 128.
