If this is in violation of TC of forums I am sorry, I checked and it seemed okay. I'm trying to upgrade some of my old coins and wanted to use them as trades. They are all certified by the big three. What is the best way to go about it? I don't use ebay for sales so that's out. Are there any dealers that accept trades? How do you find them?

If by dealer's you mean brick and mortar, retail coin shop dealer's, and if by upgrading you mean trading your unwanted coins for better coins, then good luck with that. Besides why wouldn't you rather sell your coins for as much as possible to a collector, wether it be ebay or elsewhere, then take the cash and buy your upgrades? I mean there aren't that many retail store dealer's around per square mile these days anyway. And I can't imagine finding one that's going to show interest in letting you "trade up", so to speak, without them making something on the deal. I know there are plenty of online seller's that sell on ebay or on social media and forum's such as this one. But then you'd have to find one that has the coins you need AND is willing to accept your unwanted coins in exchange. Like I said good luck with that, I would just try selling them.

yea most dealer's pay 40-50% of trends, then will try to sell you an upgrade for 80-100% of trends..

You could try a local coin show to try and sell your coins to some dealers.
And yes, most are going to want to sell their nicer coins at a premium and pay very little for lower grades. I suggest if you don't already have one, to get a CDN greysheet and study the values of what you have vs the coins you wish to own. That might give you a little extra bargaining power.

I don't use ebay, either. However, lots of dealers with excellent professional reputations use ebay extensively. Perhaps you may wish to use such a Company. You may wish to consider the consignment of them as a job lot to a well known numismatic auctioneer. The temptation is that you may find other interesting lots to bid on. The problem with this approach may be the %age lost in fees and shipping, and the use of money received tempted to be used for the payment of other than numismatic things. A coin dealer may or may not have the coins you may wish to upgrade to.

Well you threw away the best option by not using ebay. That leaves you with trading with collectors, or taking a blood bath trading with dealers if they would even allow it. Dealers like trades when you give them comparable or better material, not a lot of lower end material compared to the item you are trying to trade for.

I live about 50 miles from the nearest coin shop and a local coin show may happen every 2 or 3 years. I try to watch the newspaper for estate sales / garage sales that may list coins. Other than that I would have a much smaller collection if not for ebay. It's not perfect and certainly not free of risk but it is an option for those of us not blessed with local shops.

Search out dealers' advertisements on line the CCF is an excellent place to start, and deal directly with them over the 'phone and via mail for delivery. Perhaps they an an on line listing to peruse. Have to use mail or parcel delivery even for ebay, so that is the same cost. Payment can be by direct debit or money order. One of the problems with the upgrading of coin via a dealer is that you don't get much value for the coins that you are trading in. They like to make a profit on the buy / sell split on the coins they accept from you, as well as a profit on the buy / sell split on the the coins you may wish to upgrade to. A solution to this problem is to buy the best your budget will allow to begin with, and avoid having to upgrade.

OR you could try becoming a dealer yourself and sell off your present stuff. Of course this would mean setting up a web site or finding a coin show to start.

That is really good advice from the other members. I'd take my time. Maybe you could list one coin on ebay and see how it goes.

Personally I would not sell them to upgrade them, I would just start another Upgraded set even if it takes me a decade or more I would just do it I have never sold any of my coins, every coin I buy has a significance to me in some way or the other

I would find the coin you want to buy from a dealer, then offer him the other one in trade. If you have an MS-63 coin of a certain date and want to upgrade to an MS-64 that he has, he will likely be interested in your MS-63 coin, especially since he will not have any example once you buy the MS-64 from him. Often there is something that can be worked out.

When selling, state your selling price, let the prospective buyer negotiate...and let the dance begin. It appears that "right now" is a buyers market, and selling "right now" has not been very kind. I cannot say anything about "trades", because I have not experienced that. The BST over on the left is a good avenue to Buy / Sell / Trade, provided you have met the criteria to do so. Large and clear images are an absolute necessity!

I wish I had the $$$ not to need to get rid of old coins; unfortunately I bought some lower grade or details coins that now are taking up space

These were some of the coins I recently upgraded (traded) for a purchase. What do you think would be a fair price to receive for them?
