Nice coin. Small obverse rim bump at 3:00. Excellent hair detail. AU-58 perhaps Proof?

You generally don't see a proof this sharp with no apparent luster. It should show some traces, even through dark toning, especially in protected areas near the devices. It looks like this coin was lightly circulated/handled so that the surface luster was rubbed off. Still looks very sharp and there are no apparent spots that look worn.
It is a very attractive example of an impaired proof. Most impaired proofs have many hairlines or other unsightly damage from improper handling.

Many mid to late 19th c. Proofs were also cleaned, including by Mint employees themselves, often without particular care.
I would call this a fully struck AU55. I am not quite convinced that this is a Proof yet.

The OP revealed that this coin was pf58 in the other thread asking whether we would buy an impaired proof. For the record I made my guess before OP revealed the coin that he was referring to and what the grade was.  .

Ah, so it is a Proof, then. I was rather on the fence about it, it certainly had the full strike of a Proof but the balance of the coin seemed more like a business strike.

Quote: What makes it impaired? A proof strike that grades below 60 is considered "impaired". Any signs of circulation thus make it impaired, which is completely different than details or problems. Any impaired proof can be problem-free as this example appears to be.
