I know there is a Kansas quarter like this one selling on ebay but nothing about a California with a missing "T" that I know of. Does anyone know if this is a first for the state of California?

I can see partial traces of the T, so I think it is another error, perhaps an over polished die? I am not an expert, just my humble opinion.
Rest in Peace

Probably a grease-filled die.

Yeah I thought this as well. Although, I have noticed traces of the "T" on the Kansas quarters also.

Yikes! I checked out the link. That coin is not worth $100.

But then I don't see any reason to buy a Greaser. If you look at enough coins, you're sure to find one.
