I have a 1948 Wheat penny that wieghs 2.5g and definitely sound different when dropped any ideas? I can't seem to find any info.

The most logical reason for a bronze coin to lose that much weight is corrosion - a "coca-cola penny". But withour pics, it's impossible to do anything other than speculate.

SAP that makes sense as you can see with coin
Would that make sound considerably different when dropped?

Also coin is thinner but diameter is right on with others

It is severely corroded, I would not be surprised if the corrosion is responsible for the weight loss.

Spent some time underground. Corrosion has "flaked off " quite a bit of material...rim, surface and slight circumference will knock off half gram.

BTW, did you get it out of your "Garden" Mr. Guru?

Not found in garden but Unearthing a quality coin would be sweet. Haven't had any luck finding anything good. But my daughter and I have been going to bank and getting some rolls and searching. plus it has helped her with coin recognition and I can slip in some math skills since it's something she enjoys.
