I decided to upgrade the common banknotes I had to UNC versions. I sold the circulated ones and bought UNCs from ebay. Did the usual checks (feedback, seller's profile, seller's grading vs grading scale, etc.). No red flags.

The package arrived from the US today. Well packed, not damaged. I open it only to find one of the notes having very noticeable signs of foxing.

The notes were graded UNC by the seller.
That said, I know the range of quality within "UNC" is substantial (not to mention that some people seem to misunderstand the criteria altogether).
So, I expected bumped corners, handling marks, counting folds, corner creases. This happens when buying cheap notes sold in bulk with sample images.

But no, it had to be foxing. Multiple orange spots, on two margins at least.
And of course, that note had to be put right in the middle of the remaining - otherwise pristine - notes.

Yes, it was just 1 of 6 that was foxed. But I'm not taking the rest either. Just a week ago I heard the LCS owner say "you don't keep notes like these together with the UNC ones" and I don't have a reason to doubt his judgement.

Now I have to buy everything again, from several sources (no other person seems to have all of them).

This is certainly not the upgrade I wanted.

ebay... why did I even bother?

Yup that's ebay. You get their unwanted junk.

The longer I collect the fewer raw coins I buy and the less time I spend on ebay.

I Like ebay...to sell MY unwanted garbage. Since nobody on CCF wants any of it even when fully disclosed. Have bought some on ebay, only when I want a cheap hole filler. Not very useful for nicer upgrades...

Yes, I imagine CCF must be one of the toughest places to sell

Now I'd like to ask:

- is there a way for me to voluntarily block myself from seeing this guy's listings in my searches?

He's got a lot of listings and I don't want to waste my time clicking on them.

I am not aware of any way to block a seller so you can't see their listings.

Lately I have been doing well buying on e-bay . I found a decent seller with very fair prices and as long as I go over his photos with a fine tooth comb ,I'm obtaining some real nice coins .
But I do have to agree , a lot of e-bay sellers are just trying to get rid of their junk . Take time, cull out the junk and good stuff will abound !

I like ebay too, but mostly for Certified stuff. Raw coins are risky unless you really know what you're doing. Surfing ebay is mostly a hobby for me, and if I see a coin I can possibly buy and flip, I go for it. Have had mostly good results selling also, even though you run into a bad apple now and then. Trust but verify.

edit: Not sure if you can block a seller's listings from a saved search, but...possibly from an advanced search.

The lot with the foxed note has already been sent back to the seller. So I guess it all boils down to know who you're buying from

As for the exclusion, the guide must refer to this:

Returned-To-Buying-On-Ebay---Instant-Regret

I suppose I can't exclude him once and for all but will have to enter his username every time I log in and want to search for items - but this will still do. Thanks for pointing this option out

Epilogue:

The return has been dealt with.

At the same time as these, I also bought five notes locally.
Same thing happened, of course

That's not true at all. It has the largest inventory there is. Every major dealer is on ebay as well as multiple other sources. You're using it wrong if you can't find nice coins.

DL20K,

You may be able to exclude this seller if you save your searches. In my ebay it is listed as 'searches you follow'.

It might be too much of a hassle if you search for new things all the time and always want to exclude this seller, but if you are searching for the same few items over and over you can save the searches and it looks like the excluded seller will be saved as well.

I have always closely examined all of my acquisitions in hand, before making a decision to buy.

Can't do that with ebay.

If using ebay, just make sure that the seller has an unquestioned reputation. Lots of dealers and good people in the CCF use ebay with much success, and smiles on both sides of the deal.

ebay is an excellent resource for pricing research. That should be part of due diligence prior to purchase.

wheatiefan, did that - in a way. I saved the URL of the search with that guy excluded and now I just copy and paste it.

- and for determining worldwide availability of items (as some items are not particularly available locally but there are plenty of them elsewhere).

* * *

So far, my recent ebay experience is still miserable.
One seller failed (that one that made me start this thread), the second one (whose items I purchased at the same time) proved to be a bit better but...

... when the image shows a perfect UNC note with sharp corners and no discernible faults - and all I get is a piece with multiple corner folds and some visible rounding, how on earth should I be satisfied?

Yes, the note still - just barely - makes the UNC grade as advertised, the folds do not go through the design.
Yes, the note is still marginally better than others available (at the moment I checked).
Yes, the note is clean which is already one step ahead of the first guy.
Also, he sent a freebie (value: 8-10c - here's the pricing research mentioned by sel_69l!) and had free shipping.

This seller doesn't get added to the search exclusion list. But still, no expert grading is needed to determine that there's a noticeable difference between the note from the auction image and the note I got.
