I believe the coin is actually Brazilian. The Ruler is Joao VI. The R mint mark is Rio de Janeiro.
The divots in the obverse (heads side) worries me. How confident are you in it's authenticity? Can you weigh it?
Oh yeah, welcome to the forum!

Hi sonowman
I dont know much about the coin it was given to me with a krugerrand 1 oz and a 100 pound gold coin, basically as a gift. Is there any way to tell if its a fake ? I can post more pics if needed. I will try and get the weight of the coin.
thanks again

I wish it was a 100 1b of gold :-) But no its a Britannia 1987 100 Pound's Gold coin. I think there were only 2500 minted going by ebay and google. regards G

Can you give a weight on this coin, it looks like a 1600 Reis. But without the weight I can't be sure. From the images the coin looks cast rather than struck, it doesn't look right to me.

At "1½ inches across" (38mm), it sounds to me like it should be a 12,800 reis, also known as a "double johanna". Book weight for one of those is 28.6 grams, or slightly heavier than a silver dollar. But the design is wrong; a double-johanna should look like this, with an ornately shaped inner shield. Your design, with a round shield, matches the pictures in Krause of the 6,400 reis or johanna, which is half the weight, and a bit under 1¼ inches (30mm) across. The johanna is apparently scarcer, only listed in my Krause catalogue as "rare". A very generous gift, if it's real! So, is it real? I'd be sceptical. Particularly the rough, bubbly appearance beneath the king's chin makes me think it's a cast copy.

Here are a few more closeups. To be honest it dosent look cast as the detail on the shield is very fine. The hole below the chin looks like a gouge mark or something has pressed against the coin. The two other next to the head look like again something has pressed against the coin. I dont know how much gold there is in these coins (How pure are they) 14k 18k? According to Krause they are 0.9710 gold which I believe comes out to 22kt. I still have my doubts about it being real. If it is it's worth @$2,000.
