Got the good news last week... I start my new job on Monday! To celebrate, I treated myself to filling a long-empty and nagging hole in my Roman collection:

Nerva
96-98 AD
AR Denarius
IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P COS III PP
FORTVNA AVGVST, Fortuna standing left, holding rudder and cornucopia
Minted Jan-Sept, 97
RIC 16

Closing-The-Gaps...-Nerva-AR-Denarius
Closing-The-Gaps...-Nerva-AR-Denarius

I know it isn't a "gem" coin, but Nerva is special in that
1. His coins are by far the least readily available of the Five Good Emperors
2. His denarii in particular are plagued by poor strikes, poor portraiture, or both. Problem free denarii tend to run in the several hundreds or low thousands.

I had been eyeing and occasionally biting at his denarii for a good 8 months before I was able to win this for about 1/3 of the price of the example in my Vcoins watch list; 1/6 the price of the XF problem free example I was also watching. With some big game in my sights for the next couple years, I felt this was a respectable hole filler for just over $50. What particularly drew me to this coin was the fine portraiture and clear, legible legends.

Sounds like you scored big, Steve. A new job and a nice looking coin on your terms. Does it get any better?

Great buy Finn.
I also need him for my 5 good emperors set...
I'm a bit frustrated as I'm on a tight budget
300$ for the set!
I'm already on 95$ with 2 coins.Trajan and Antoninus Pius!

Good news on the job.
Maybe another hush hush post in the making?

Saludos Paul

Thanks all!

It does feel good to be back in the game... with Nerva's hole filled, I am just about out of "easy" emperors. Aside from duplicates (e.g. Aurelius as Caesar and as Augustus) and upgrades, I am down to Elagabalus, Severus II and a few more wives, then it's on to the really tough, $200+ emperors.

And @Paul, I could tell you, but then i'd have to kill you
