There is something to be said about circulated coins. I know most focus on buying the best grade they can afford. I think an honestly worn coin has a story to tell and is interesting. Often I wonder where the coins have been or what they were used for and who might have used them. While uncirculated coins are beautiful, they don't have those stories of their circulated counterparts. I envision a Morgan dollar being plopped onto the counter at a saloon for whiskey. Or the buying power of an Indian Head cent in a Little House on the Prairie setting.

All of that is true and that is one of the reasons coin collecting is so interesting but many people like to collect uncirculated coins as well.

You make very valid points, Force. My 7070 is mostly circulated coins (the exceptions being a few of the modern issues). It certainly feels, to me, that it has more of a story to tell.

I like coins that show no wear. However, that is sort of weird since really what is an Uncirculated coin? If you think about it, as soon as a coin is made it gets sent out of the Mint. This means it is now in ciculation. Although only slightly, still each coin has now been in a circulated situation. This could mean scratches, dents, marks, etc. although no real signs of wear. And further, a coin could be sent to a dealer by the Mint, sold to a collector, then another dealer, then another collector and over and over and over yet still no signs of wear. Now is that coin Uncirculated or is it now a Circulated coin?

I consider coins to be artistic representations of the period and location they were minted for. As such, I prefer beautiful coins, although beauty is most certainly a matter of individual taste.
If you buy what you love you will almost always remain proud of your buying decisions. If you buy because something is "cheap" you will likely develop displeasure even if the price appeared to be a bargain.

T-Bop, I do resemble that! Just took my pain pills, don't want to lose the euphoria any time soon! Now THESE are "Circulated MINT Issued" cents, result of the last totally worthless Brinks box I had the unfortunate privilidge to have wasted my time on... <-------- (not drool...!)

TheForce, I dig your point. I've purchased several '30s super worn silver quarters for the simple fact of wondering where they had been and what "story" it could tell. Very fun to think about!
