Please post the anacs grade and the PCGS grade. Also what type of anacs holder it was in before you crossed it. Au-55 is my grade.

Old Small White ANACS gave her an AU55PCGS gave her an AU50She is now at CAC, where hopefully she will get beaned...possibly gold! Thanks for playing along!

I like it at AU53. You have an excellent chance to sticker as the coin is showing nice toning and luster in the protected areas.

oih82w8: Ouch, I thought your 1853 A/R had a very decent shot at a green bean. In retrospect any thoughts on why it did not pass?.

I am guessing that JA did not like the "tone" of the coin.

It appears harder to get a AU 50 to sticker. I have often thought that JA does not like the low end of the AU grades.

I agree that based on sharpness of the devices, the coin deserves a higher grade, but I can see how the obverse of the coin doesn't appear to have much luster. I can see some slight porosity beginning to set on that side. I think that it was these issues that dropped the grade to 50. The surface of the reverse looks better, is colorful and suggests that there may be more luster here. Clearly the better side of this coin. Having said that, I have seen some really ugly coins in AU55 holders that wouldn't be able to hold a candle to this one. Crackout and resubmit to NGC perhaps? Some people like to play TPG bingo. At the end of the day, I think you have a nice coin and it seems like you like it, which may be all that matters. How do folks know that JA graded this coin?
