So hopefully everyone can cut me some slack on some of the images I'll be posting. I tried taking some axial pics and I'm open to suggestions but these next several posts are all taken the same way. Also there may have been a little glare or purple color from gloves I wore.

the 93S is the key date and very pricey.....you might want to send that in and make sure thats its real vs fake. There are many fakes

I had met with 2 dealers in the past that both said it was real for what its worth

For a coin like this don't use axial lighting.
Axial lighting is mostly for proof/proof-like/cameo coins and rainbow toning.
Right now that coin looks like a fake.
And for an 1893-S you absolutely need a TPG opinion (PCGS or NGC).

Agree needs to be authenticated. Also I cannot see the rabbit ears which is a telltale sale of an authentic piece which is in LIBERTY

My gut is Chinese fake, also the date position looks off.

As I said on some of my other posts this was my first time really trying to take pictures of some of my coins and well, they don't really look how they do in person. I also have a good feeling this isn't fake otherwise the one dealer and one PCGS authorized dealer wouldn't have offered several thousand in its raw state unless they also knew.

How did you acquire this coin?

Date position is correct, MM size and position are correct for V1, date slant is correct. Surfaces are HIGHLY suspect as they have the trademark rough, pitted look of a cast copy or spark-erosion copy. The color is also a concern as the dark areas around the MM and legends are typical of the Chinese fakes in every respect. There is not enough detail to diagnose LIBERTY.

Your best bet would be to have the PCGS-certified dealer submit the coin to PCGS on your behalf if he thinks it is genuine. There are some very deceptive fakes made of real silver, using spark-erosion dies, out there, which would fool many dealers; in addition, 1893 Philly mint Morgans are seen with "added" S mintmarks.

For what it's worth, if real, this coin is worth about $12,000 to $15,000, although the extent of the environmental damage will reduce that price accordingly. I won't dismiss this one out of hand as a fake, but the signs are ominous.

Try taking your pics under incandescent light. This one is hard to judge.

I would use a loupe/lupe and compare the three key markers, as noted on various sites that discuss how to authenticate the '93-S.



The raised die mark that runs through the T in LIBERTY can be seen on the lowest grade '92-S, so that's the first place I would look. From your images, none of the 3 markers are visible, but there almost looks to me like there is a seam on the rim at the 12:00 position from your photos.

This is a heavily counterfeited, extremely valuable, 'King of the Morgans' coin, and a coin of this value being sold as raw should always be questioned. I had been looking for one, and passed on three that I couldn't see the markers on. This is a coin that can relatively easily be verified by the die markers. All 100,000 copies were made with the same obverse die, and all will have the 3 markers.
