I had $150 from birthday money that was burning a hole in my pocket so I headed out this morning to a couple of local coin shops. I'm so giddy right now that I'm having a hard time typing...

My intention was to do my best to fill up some holes in my roosie set which I did, but not nearly as many as I thought I would.

I picked up 3
1949-S MS63 $38
1950-S MS62 $24
1951-D MS63 $7

I couldn't find any others that I was missing that matched the blast white set I'm putting together.

So just for giggles I started looking around to see what else had shown up since the last time I was in.

And there it was...
A beautiful borderline XF 34-S $... nicely toned. No damage. Just a super sharp coin. That lone hole in my Peace set has been nagging me for nearly 10 years. I just couldn't find the right one. I'd seen several AU examples which would have worked, but they were all in the $250 range. which is more than I wanted to spend. And then I'd seen several solid XF coins in the $125 range but none had the right look to them. Anyway long story short and $64 later my Peace set is FINISHED.

I thought at this point that I was finished... but I always check out the partial set books to see what new has come in. For the most part this area is a bunch of trash, but I had picked up several good deals there in the past on coins which had been overlooked (like a VF 14-S Lincoln in a $5 set).

Now I know almost next to nothing about Liberty nickels but a new set had come in. It was complete from 1898 through 1912 except for the 12-S (all G4ish). The price tag on the set was $25 for 16 coins, I looked through it a second time and noticed that there were 17 coins. In addition to the ones I just mentioned there was also an uncirculated 1883 no cents. With the way the album (Harco Coinmaster from Littleton) was set up, it was sort of hidden on top of the 1912.

Now like I mentioned I know hardly anything about Liberty nickels, BUT my thinking was most coins which are 125 years old and still uncirculated are generally at the minimum worth $25 on their own. So I decided to gamble and added the Nickel Album to my stack.

I didn't make it to a second shop...

Strangely enough, the 1883 NC nickel is probably the easiest V nickel to find in high/unc condition, and certainly the least expensive. That's because when they put the word "cents" on the coin the same year, the rumor got around that the mint would be recalling the no-cents variety. So everybody hoarded the things. Today the far more common nickels cost much more in MS60+.

I decided to add to my collection as well. I am have decided to give the classics break for a while and work on the moderns. Picked up some proof sets to crack out and put in the album.

Nice haul there Spring! Its true that a UNC 1883 NC Liberty Head Nickel is unusually common and inexpensive for a 125 year old coin but....$25 is still a steal. In MS 60-63ish, $25 is probably right on the money. 64,65,66 you're more in the $50+ range.

The rest of the V nicks arent too bad themselves. In About Good grades (no LIBERTY SHOWING) they fetch for, on average, a buck a piece. Through in a couple letters and they'll get two to five dollars. Complete LIBERTY? Ten at the least.

I pulled out the Red Book and did a little searching online on how to grade Liberty nickels and then went back through and looked at the other coins in the set. Most are only going to be G4 like I initially suspected, but there's one with 3 letters of liberty showing and another one with 4, which should make the two of those grade as solid VGs.

I took a closer look at the No Cents nickel. After pulling it out of the album I'm not convinced its unc anymore. I'm not convinced that it's not as the details are all spot on, but there's a real lack of luster. It doesn't look like it's been cleaned, but for the details that are there I would expect more luster.

Regardless I'm still pretty excited about the day as a whole. It seems like I'm always working on 2 sets at any given time but with the how long it was taking me to finish the Peace set I hadn't given any thought to what set I was going to work on next as I still have at least 3 or 4 months until I'm finished with the Roosies.

I think I'm off to a pretty good start on Liberty nickels.

Sounds like you had a great birthday. However, another method of disposing the problem of that money burning a hole in your pocket would have been to just send it to me.

If you like nickels, you've got to try the 3-cent kind!

[C'mon guys, you knew this was coming!]
