I search through rolls in the U.S. and was wondering what I should be keeping, I'm thinking comparable to our Wheat penny in extra value. So what ruler would be the cut off? I also might try and get some canadian rolls when I go on vacation to rice lake. Jser Edited by Jser 04/25/2008 10:12 am

Hi, Jser, That's quite a bit, for me to tell you what to keep. The Canada cent, anything with the Kings Portrait, 1947, blunt & pointed 7, 1948 A between dent, 1949 A points to dent, 1953 & 1954 shoulder fold variety 1955 NSF, 4 varietys of the 1965, 1983 near & far beads, 1985 Pointed 5 I know there is more, you should try and get a Charlton catalogue. Hope this helps some

I'm just looking for real simple, don't really look for errors or variations. This is sounding really NOOB but anything with any guy on(the clean shaven one too)?

Jser, no you don't sound that much like a noob. A lot of people from the states are not that knowledgeable of what to look for when it comes to Canadian change that circulates on our side of the boarder. I once cracked a roll when I was in upstate NY that contained all George VI cents (the clean-shaven guy). I personally would even keep nicer "young head" Elizabeth II coins. This way it is more or less not a bad idea to keep anything from the early 1960s and back. Just out of curiosity, what is the oldest Canadian penny that you have come across?

The oldest one I got was probably out of some saved pocket change of my grandpas or dads(they are not coin collectors). It is a 1940. Thanks for all of your help everybody!

Yeah, it is really surprising how many old Canadian pennies are still circulation. It really does make you wonder if people in the US are just more willing to hoard. As it is, Wheat pennies from the 1950s are neither than valuable nor that rare, but they are hoarded. This suggests an artificial inflation of what is considered rare or uncommon with regard to US coins.
