I just bought this piece and while I was going back to look at the pictures and appreciate it while I patiently wait I notices the really intense doubling of the eye. As common as the 1887 Alligator Eye is, I find it more difficult to find any auction records or more information outside of the VAM site for this one!

Although it appears to be a doubled eye it is not VAM-24. The date position for VAM-24 is normal, 2.5 denticles. The position of yours is considered far at a full 3 denticles. You'll need to search the far date VAMs most likely when you have it in hand as '85 P is mostly about minute pups.

I really like the reverse colors!

Here is the closer up picture of the obverse. I am primarily a bust half dollar collector so VAMs are completely new to me. Thanks for all of the help guys!

I think you may actually have a VAM-5. Have a look at the left star #1 to bust point to date die crack on the bottom full coin image on the VAM-5A page. This die crack occurred prior to the clash event as your example is pre-clash. http://www.vamworld.com/1885-P+VAM-5A I think I can make out the doubling below the 5 as well but these images are a bit grainy.

Aha! It is the VAM 5a. It does look like their is some minor clashing on the back. I appreciate the help! Why does VAMworld call the 5 a R3 and say in the same breath that the 5a is much more common and then go on to call it an R5? I bought this piece strictly for the color and when I saw the really pronounced doubling on the eye it was just a bonus! I wish it was easier to post quality pictures on this site! Thank you for all of your insight and help. Looks like it is too late to change the topic name so should I delete the thread or leave it up incorrect?

Rarity numbers are just a best guess assigned by Leroy V. Allen at the time of discovery and are rarely ever updated as new examples come to light.

As far as the thread title you could try contacting a moderator to have it corrected.

How about a little more fun, what would all of you grade this coin? It is straight graded by PCGS

You may want to start a new GTG or you vs PCGS thread in the classic grading section to get more looks and replies.
