Hello everybody!

I have nearly an entire box of copper pennies (acquired through coin roll hunting) now, and I was wondering about several things.

First of all, how much would someone pay for it? Right now the spot price of copper would value it at around $45, but would people pay more or less than that?

Second, is the price of copper expected to rise, decrease, or remain stable? Would it be a good idea to hold onto that box and wait until the copper spot price is higher?

Thanks, and I appreciate your help.

It's anyone's guess. Copper peaked a few years ago when the housing market was good (lots of copper wire) and has been pretty low ever since.

Speaking in terms of NPV, you can do more with $45 now than you could do with $50 next year, or $60 in five years.

I would calculate your costs (face value + fees + shipping) and list it on ebay with a ~$35 starting bid. Take what you can get as long as you break even.
Rest in Peace

Well, since cents are worth 1 cent today regardless of copper prices and tomorrow it will still be worth 1 cent regardless of copper prices...and the fact you cannot melt US coins as an individual because it is against the law, and if you've watched the PM trends over the last 15 years, is it really worth it tying up portable cash now when you can turn it into something with a better chance of higher returns in the future?

Those questions I asked myself, last month as a matter of fact, when I realized holding on to circulated copper cents in XF/AU condition was...NUTZ!
Question-Regarding-Copper-Penny-Value

Back to the story...I then dumped my two Large Whey protein containers of over 6900 copper LMC and 3800 Zincolns respectively back into the cash stream making a whole lot of CHRer's in the Midwest Region very happy! I then used that $100 to buy collectable coins that complete my current collections increasing their overall worth now and into the future. Bought some silver coins too, silver just my go over the $20 sell it now mark to break even in the next few months.

A couple years ago, after putting together bulk LWC lots, I had 60 ROLLS of common dates (50's D & 40's P) I took to my LCS and swapped for the equivalent of $55 for junk silver just to rid my self of that albatross.

Unless you have pristine, OBW rolls of LMC's, it is not worth the effort and space holding on to copper cents. If we do go to being "cents-less" (Are we there yet?...Are we there yet?) the price of copper will go DOWN because of the amount of marketable copper there then will be. Thingabboudtit!

As has already been mentioned the copper in cents can't be melted
legally so therefore they hold no precious metal "value".

As far as the future... NO ONE knows the future value of copper, silver gold or any other commodity.

I think I agree with Finn. See if you can make a little profit on ebay. Remember, you can ship up to 70 lbs in USPS Priority Flat Rate boxes within the US.

It depends on whether they're LWCs or LMCs. If they're all Wheats, try to sell.

Otherwise, it may be more worth it to just cash them in at face to save the trouble of all that.

Then get a nice silver coin!
