I found this 1958 d Wheat penny in my grandpa's collection I inherited. It is dull on the face of the penny like all of the Wheat penny's in the collection and the back side is multicolored 90% shiny and 10% dull. Does this look like a error?

Looks like PMD (post mint damage).

to the Forum. If one side is shiny and one side is dull it probably sat in one place for a long time, maybe in an album. Post another coin and try to get a close up picture of both sides.
Rest in Peace

to the forum!

That coin was probably in a folder, a Blue Whitman folder or one of the other varieties. Looks like it 's been effected by humidity/moisture of some sort, spent time in a basement or garage in a box maybe? Seem what we call environmental damage. Somehow that shiny portion is the original Mint luster that was protected, sadly the whole coin wasn't.

with Crazyb0. It looks like it was in a folder that allowed the face (obverse) to be exposed somewhat to turn brown and the back (reverse) was more protected but moisture got trapped in there and caused the deterioration you see. I'm 99% sure it's the result of improper storage.

There may have been other things involved as well.

Could also be that the penny was glued to some kind of display.

I think you're right, durkastani. The reverse certainly looks like it has glue on it.
