Ive recently ran apon a story.
I went to the local flea market to find some 2×2s and coin tubes for my wheat pennies. I bought an old box full of them. I got home and lord behold, at the bottom of the box was an old newspaper clipping wrapped into a square. In that news paper was a coin. A 1971 Lincoln Penny. On the newspaper is the story of this penny dated back in 1973. Pics follow

Looks like a completely normal cent to me. Why do you think it's special?

Take a pic of the newspaper clipping, and see if it's legible, then post it.

I wish I could see the newspaper article.

My only observation is that it looks plated to me. With what, who knows?

to CCF. Better pics needed. I know of a 1974 aluminum cent but have not heard of a 1971 zinc cent. Also post photo of newspaper story please. Weight would also help.

Hello. I believe I recently purchased this 1971 coin on ebay. It came with a news paper clipping in reference to a musician by the name of Emidio Bastianelli discovered three pennies of this type in 1973. According to the article he sent the three pennies to someone named Alan Herbert error coin columnist for Numismatic News Weekly who in turn sent the coins to the US Mint. After extensive testing the mint determined the golden cents were light in color due to having an abnormal amount of zinc and light in weight to to being struck on thinner that normal planchets. The mint requested permission to conduct destructive testing on one of the coins which is to cut one in half and analyze its content. Basianelli agreed. Bastianelli's compensation was a letter from the Mint authenticating the coin and telling how it came to be made. Am curious since one of the three pennies was cut in half then I have one of the two pennies lett would they be considered rare and valuable.?

Not a real error. It's been altered with. Btw, Lincoln cents were made out of Copper until 1982. Also, post pictures of the news story, if you don't have a picture of it, then nobody is going to believe you.

Zinc poisoning IS a thing, but only on 1982 and later cents. It happens when the plating bath that deposits the copper on the zinc core gets too much zinc dissolved in it - causes the coins to have a slightly yellowish cast. But it's considered within the normal variation and there's no value to it.

However, in 1971, Zinc plated copper wasn't a thing. So this is either environmental damage or post mint plating.

Lincoln cents, in 1971, were made of 95% copper - 5% tin/zinc. If the zinc level was elevated on a particular run of planchets could the result be a slightly yellowish cast?

The article was published in the Asbury Park Press, Sunday, June 17, 1973, page 58.

The photo in the article appears to show FOUR coins which doesn't quite fit with the article text.
