Hey,

I have the option to pick up this proof Seated Liberty half dime - it has some issues but it is straight graded. What do you think a fair value would be for it?

Certainly not worth the $420 that he is asking for a PR NGC 62 coin. Have some patience you will find the right coin at the right price. Heritage sold two PCGS 1872 PR 63's last year for $376 and $365. As for a fair value of this coin I have no idea but you will if you buy it and later decide to trade it or sell it. As you say it has issues and IMO a coin to avoid regardless of cost.

The issues on the coin will be a huge distraction down the road when it is time to sell.

Value? Maybe half of what the seller is asking for it. (And even that is still a risk!)

Don't buy somebody elses problem unless you have an immediate outlet for it.

I would also repeat the above advice to wait for a nicer example.

Wouldn't this be a great candidate for numismatic conservation service?

It's so lucky to get a straight 62 that it would be insane to crack it.

As far as conservation goes the scuff marks will not go away. The heavy dark spots are most likely covering corroded metal. Removing the encrusted dark stuff will reveal pitted surfaces. The light brown toning might come off. I would imagine this coin has already been dipped a few times in it's life.
