The title of my topic doesn't really cover what I want to know. I was hoping people might give me some advice/answers for a few questions?

1. I have read and heard many times that the plastics we keep our coins in---whether they be in mint sets, 2x2s, plastic sleeves with pockets---can be, and often are over time, detrimental to the preservation of our coins. How much truth is there in this? Are some plastics worse than others?

2. Are coins in mint sets better safe-guarded if removed and stored in other ways?

3. How is the value of a coin changed if removed from a set or pnc?

Thanks in advance to those who offer their thoughts.

1. only a couple of different plastics are used to store coins (at least in purpose made equipment), PVC and Mylar are the two main ones. PVC is flexible and smells like plastic, while Mylar is usually stiffer and doesn't smell. PVC is the only plastic (that I know of) that is used that can be dangerous to coins. We will pics to determine whether the holder might be dangerous (if it is in a card or something it nearly certainly isn't).

2. They might be better safeguarded, depending on the container, but...

3. The value would be reduced, as the set/coin would be more valuable untouched in it's original case.

Hope I was helpful, Dan.
