Have one I'm going to look at, just paying for gold, no numismatic value. Thanks

With no guarantee that it hasn't been cleaned (or even that it's genuine), the $700 asking price is slightly on the steep side. Coming from CraigsList, I advise caution, from the counterfeit perspective as well as all things "personal safety".

It looks like you have set your heart on buying a $10 gold Eagle. Nice designs, all of them I don't blame you.
I get the vibes that numismatic scarcity or rarity seems to not be a motivation, or is over what you have envisaged what you would like to pay, and would be happy to just have a representative gold coin of decent size in your collection.
I have seen reported that ALL of the American gold series has been faked, even in good quality gold.
Your best defense against this is to buy a slabbed coin, implicit in which is a confidence that in what you buy is genuine. Also, deal with a dealer of known good reputation.
The justify the extra cost of a slabbed coin, you would be better off getting an Eagle in at least a low MS grade, (say MS60), where the premium over gold is not too large. The slab in addition to providing a confidence in authenticity, will also provide physical protection, and allow handling the coin without worry, even if the slab is accidently dropped.
One of the more common date Eagles should fill your requirement. You then choose the design you like the best.

Save yourself the headache and pay the extra for a slabbed coin! Imagine saving a few bucks and later on you find out the raw coin you have is a good fake or has been cleaned and otherwise deemed not desirable and you have a hard time selling it later on?

In less than 60 seconds, I found NGC certified MS60 $10 Libs for under $660 shipped. With patience, you could find one for less. I would stay away from raw gold coins.

5% over melt is about the best you'll do. Usually more like $50 over melt.

If you're patient and can make it to the larger coin shows you will likely find a few dealers selling closer to spot. Most of those will likely have some cleaning. I picked up a nice 1899 in AU with a rim ding for $630 in Baltimore (at that time I think it was within 2% of spot). This one was about $25 cheaper than the other dealers I saw.

Well I survived another CL purchase. If you are careful, there's some good stuff out there. I've been doing it for about 10 years now, one can never bee too careful. I paid $600 for the coin, that was my up front offer, and he accepted.

Fair price, looks AU or low unc, one of the most common dates. Does it weigh 16.7 grams, plus or minus 0.1 grams?
I'd take to a shop and offer it for sale if you want to verify authenticity. Don't bother to slab it. it's bullion, just like sovereigns and napoleons.
