The best book for information is the 2009 Official RedBook of U.S. Coins !
In there is WONDERFUL information on any coin or denomination that the U.S. Mint has ever minted going back to the 1700's all the way up to THIS YEAR !
Mintage numbers, compositions of coins, years of variations, errors, etc. etc. etc.........it's #1 and often called the "coin collectors Bible".
That's the book you need.
You can also go online and research different books that you find there that may show you histories and information about probably any denomination of coin. Amazon.com would be a place to order these books...amongst others.
There's so much info out there !..........Morgan Silver Dollars are a fun one to start with...You can find out why they're called "Morgan" Silver Dollars versus " Peace dollars"..type these key words in for yourself and you can learn right there !Buffalo Nickels are fun too.....Mercury Dimes.....there's a lot of "beginner" U.S. coins to start with that are easy to get still and inexpensive.
Educating yourself before you start is pretty smart of you !.......good luck and have fun !

The RedBook is probably the best single reference available, but don't overlook this website right here! In particular, take a look at some of the links in the "Navigation" box on the top left of this page.

You left out numerous details. Such as are you planning on purchasing all your coins? Are you planning on going to coin shops or coin shows? Are you planning on attempting to purchase bags of coins from the banks? Do you have friends, neighbors or relatives that may have hoards of coins? Do you work in a place where coins are easily accessable?
As with anyone going into a hobby for the first time they should really have a basic idea of what, why, where, how, etc. to accumulate such items.
My suggestion is to just start with the numersous Lincoln Cent otherwise none as pennies.

Carl,
If you had taken the time to notice, Spedward is an Aussie so none of what you said applies- there won't be any banks, shops, shows, numerous Lincolns, or relatives/neighbors to get US coins from in Australia. Internet purchases are pretty much it if you are from another country(and trading with your fellow CCFers)

Spedward,
forum mom(Susan) is currently selling the latest edition of the RedBook in the B/S/T forum. Read through that book and then you will probably have a better idea of your US collecting aims.

I have seen plenty of Australian coins at shops and shows here in the US, why would one think there would not be any US coins at Australian shops or shows? Granted, it might be slim pickings, but to say there won't be any?

Well, Australia has less than 10% the population of the US so there is not a large enough population base to support the numerous shows and shops here in the US. I did not literally mean that no US coins could be found, just meaning that if a person in Australia wants to do more than just a little general collecting of US coins, they are going to have to look outside of the country because the pickings will be slim.

Spedward, you are in a great place to start right now. As eaglefoot mentioned, the Navigation bar on the left of this screen has a wealth of information for free. You have 50 posts now; So, you can start trading coins with other CCF members here. There are plenty of members that would love to trade US coins for Aussie coins, including myself! I've traded with other Aussies and have really enjoyed the experiences; Trading is a great way to acquire coins from another country.

Keep us up to date on what you decide to collect! I know I would enjoy some nice aust. coins and would be willing to watch at shows for coins your interested in and pass them on at cost or trade.

I was once in australia while in the military. Was an exchange program spent a month there with your military and saw the gold coast and sydney and another place up north of gold coast (don't remember the name). Still have my bottle opener that I was given from an aussie that goes on my keyring says Victoria Bitter :) Good memories Good times.

American coins are available here in small quantity, but you'll have to go to a coin dealer to find them, unless you've got friends or relatives who've come back from a trip to the US with some change.

Modern circulating US coins have to be fished out of the "Mixed World Coins" scratchtrays. You'll sometimes see "classic" US coins for sale, but few dealers carry a broad selection and compared to other foreign coins, they're very expensive.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Spedward, once you decide what you might collect, I would be happy to do a trade. Shipments from here in Cali to Aus are pretty quick, so that's the easy part!

Ok a lot to get through LOL.

yes carl I'm in Australia, so I don't plan on making a trip to the USA to go to the banks to look for some coins.

People telling me to get the ' RedBook' had an e-mail form someone saying theyd give me one, I didn't know what it was, so yeh.

Errm theres an antique/coin dealer in Toowoomba (Aus), wouldn't have a clue if they have any USA coins, will check it out.

So what I'm going to start off collecting... eagle has suggested Morgan silver dollars and Buffalo nickels, someone else suggested lincoln cents, I won't be collecting too much, but I think I might start with lincoln cents, once I get the RedBook, I will see what else there is.

Yes getting the coins, Trading, once I learn to post mail internationally (Im 15 come on!) someone mentioned I have enough posts to start trading, yes but I've been a member for about 5 days, I just love posting. Might buy some off ebay too. May know some people that have some american coins, I have a $1 note? lol.

Eddy
