Real, but very harshly cleaned. Really not a collectible coin unless you like "bargains".

I think that's a bit too harsh. Yes, the coin is cleaned, but it is still a decent quality. Guilders from this era are often cleaned, and even though this year is not that uncommon, it is not that easy to find an uncleaned one in a good quality. There are still plenty of collectors who would be perfectly happy with this coin.

Coins I find in my area are mostly cleaned, I hate it and it really irks me.
I tell the dealers but they say it can't be helped or maybe because I buy the cleaned coins
people think cleaning is good and the cycle perpetuates. But I couldn't help but buy
this one as most I've seen are really worn down, so I just pulled the trigger.

it looks like it was cleaned with a wire brush of some sort.
I think there are gentle ways to clean a coin but this is crazy.

I can't say for sure of course without measuring myself, but this is an estimate based on the pictures: The coin looks real to me, but indeed cleaned. Which is nothing special, as cleaning coins used to be common practice for collectors up to a few decades back. Most of my older Dutch coins also show signs of cleaning. Otherwise, it's a beauty, really.

Seems that the opinion on this coin's condition is polarizing although both sides agree it's cleaned.

Not really polarizing, just telling what was common practice in at least the Dutch numismatic community a few decades back. Just like spraying some chemicals over a coin to 'preserve' it... Habits and insights change, nothing to be worried about.

Nevertheless, I wish my Willem II gulden was of this quality. Despite the cleaning, it's still really a beautiful coin!
