I hope you can read my chickenscratch, but this is a rough diagram of my house's front lawn, in which I have found several coins. Would this be considered a spill?

Would-This-Be-Considered-A-Coin-Spill?

Key:
Red = Modern coin, from 1959 to date.
Yellow = Non-Coin object
Blue = Wheat penny
Green = My oldest find (1913 Wheat penny)
Purple = Not-yet-dug coin signal.

So, would this just be a lucky yard, or a very spread out coin spill?
Rest in Peace

Roy , No , this is not what we call a spill ,though impressive number of coins found . A spill is when you find 3,4, or more coins in the same hole .

My guess, since the majority of the coins you have found have been in the right side or your lawn (if facing the house), is that coins were scattered when previous residents reached into their pockets (or purse) with their right hand to retrieve their keys when walking up the sidewalk. When they pulled the keys out they also may have snagged a coin or two that headed towards the right side of the yard. So, it is just the occasional lost coin and not a spill.

(Most people are right handed, too!)
Rest in Peace

you really need at least 3 coins in a small space, maybe two square feet, indicating that all the coins were lost at the same time.

I worked a cabin by a lake last year that had a really steep grassy hill going down to the docks. I found 83 coins in less than three hours. Even though I often found coins pretty close together the depths and types still didn't have enough coins to indicate a single spill in all those finds. 17 were silver including a 1917-S type two Standing Liberty quarter in high EF condition.

When I was a teen back in the '70's, I threw handfuls of copper cents into my front yard.

Yes for a purpose.

I think I would go out and dig those purple ones. I would just have to know what they are.
