Hello all, I bought this as a 1797 Rev of '97 stems. Can anyone confirm this? Is it even a 1797. It looks like it has the correct bust style for the '97s.

I think I see something... hopefully I'm not bonkers. Edit: On second thought, I'm not so sure. Looked at a genuine example of the coin and the 9 looks much larger on the image I was looking at.

I think the "9" you are seeing is in the wrong spot, but what if...

It certainly appears to be a Rev of '97 w/stems (one upper leaf left, two upper leaves right) but the right side of the wreath is badly worn. The "no stems" varieties are extremely scarce.
This reverse was used from 1797 to 1807 so in and of itself it is not diagnostic of a 1797 date.

So you know no diagnostic to identify the coin as a 1797?

Too much wear. If I could see the hair curls below the ear we could narrow it down to 1797 or 1798 (Type 1) vs. 1798 (Type 2) to 1807.

it's NOT a 1796, and probably not a 1798. Can't be after 1798 because of the Type 1 Hair

Highest wave of hair is almost under the upright of the R, that is unusual on 1797's, it is usually further left. Afer a quick look through for matches in 1797 and 1798, and then eliminating most of those matches due to differing leaf positions on the rev, I'd say closest match is 1797 S-139 or 140. (That is NOT a definite statement of attribution but a first impression for a quick comparison.)
