Found this at a coin store mixed it with a number of other coins. How can I tell if it is real.

The position and the shape of the "3" is not right. There's also some sort of monkey business on the field to its left that looks like tampering.

How many 1943 steel Cents were copper plated in high school chemical labs?

I cannot dismiss what, for me at least, is a strong possibility. Very cheap and easy to do.

I have even had a gold coin gold plated to cover up hard silver mounting marks.
I had not the slightest intention of increasing the value by deception; remains of the mounting were still visible under examination.

That's too bad that it's a altered coin. Keep looking. :)
