Being American I don't get a chance to play with UK coinage often. I recently noticed the current £2 coin is almost exactly the same diameter as the old 10p coin and only slightly heavier.

Would old 10p coins work in coin machines in place of the £2 coin, such as CoinStar (if they have them in the UK) or vending machines?

I imagine that if a machine used weight and size only they would be...

I also don't know if coin rolls are common in the UK these days but if it were couldn't someone obtain a number of old 10p coins and fill a roll with them except for the end coins?

The old 10p is thinner and a different material to the uni-metal £2 coins (these were legal tender but not seen in circulation). We don't use rolls really for UK coins (except a few firms like McDonalds seem to) our banks all use transparent bags where the contents can clearly be seen, and which bang all the coins together :P

Hi n9jig!

Banks in the UK don't supply coins in rolls, but in clear plastic bags. The contents are visible to the teller. The bags are weighed by the bank teller when you pay them in.

Confuse-Old-10p-With-2£-Coin?

Most modern slot machines check a coin's electro-magnetic qualities so I doubt if a 10p would work.

Also, the old 10p coins were withdrawn in 1992 whereas the £2 coin was not introduced until 1997. So apart from coin collectors, very few people would have had piles of old 10p coins lying around the house when the £2 came along.

£2 coin is 28.4 mm 12.0 g and the large 10p is 28.5 mm 11.3 g. Diameter is very close but the difference in weight I would imagine would stop them from being used in vending machines. I think they're fairly accurate - lightweight fake pound coins get repeatedly rejected.

We don't use rolls in the UK as far as I'm aware. Coins are banked in clear plastic bags so you'd be able to see the contents.

Hope this helps.
