Public schools aren't bad everywhere. We have three public schools in Shreveport that are the top ranked schools in the entire state and luckily, my son got into one. Competition is fierce and requires testing to get into kindergartern.

As for refund? We're not sure how much we are getting, but if the Bush administration wants us to spend it, we will do the opposite of what he suggests. So I guess we'll save it for awhile- give us a little cushion.

nds76.........
I knew it !......I kept pointing out to people that mine said "Up to $600.00" !
It DID NOT SAY $600.00........it said ...."up to"
And sure enough .......you got "up to" $600.00 !

mycrob......
Some people will "have" to spend it for gas and groceries though.....they won't have a choice and can't afford to "save it" sadly !
Yeah, I agree that some public schools are very good. I went to a small town school and the academics/athletics were great!......but my senior class had only 39 people in it !...I think that the teachers (if you have good ones that is) can get better results with a "smaller" classroom and spend more time with each student......we had very high standards and very high results there....but I think nowadays it's the "exception" not the "general rule".......
The No Child Left Behind Act.....is just pushing kids through no matter what.......I don't think that's working like it was intended to. I've heard a lot of bad things about that nationwide......depending on ones political persuasion and viewpoints and "reactionary observations" is one thing.......but the "actuality" or "reality" of the situation nationwide is something else.......It isn't working well from what I've heard !...."cover stats" are one thing to show political groups who are checking this "program"...(and results shown aren't great).....and true "good high school education" is another thing.
As a whole it's just "sub par" espicially when compared to other countries that we compete with now or in the future with this and other future generations.

Your payment may be less than the maximum for one or more of the following reasons:

*You are single and your net income tax liability is less than $600. If you file Form 1040 net income tax liability is the amount shown on Line 57, plus the amount on Line 52.
*You are married and your net income tax liability is less than $1,200.
*You are single and your adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than $75,000. On Form 1040, AGI is the amount on Line 37.
*You are married filing a joint return and your AGI is more than $150,000.
*You owe back taxes.
*You have non-tax federal debts such as unpaid student loans or child-support obligations.

Should get mine soon.
1200 (couple) + 600 (2 kids)
The first 500 goes into a new stainless steel infrared gas grill.
The rest goes in my 2 girl's saving accounts.

May revise my plan and apply the check to the purchase of a vehicle that gets 35+ mpg. That would allow me to go 75% farther for the same amount on those roll hunting expeditions!

livingdinosaur - What kind of mileage would you get on that ride you posted?!

Hey, I thought I was getting $1800, I didn't read my letter too closely, bet it said "up to $1800". Ummmmmmmm.....spent it already on a Disney Vacation!! Gotta use it to pay off the credit card on it. Truth be told though, contrary to what the govt wants me to do, I was going to go to Disney anyway, this is just a way to help justify the trip. Essentially, I'll be saving it, I just won't have to dig quite so far into the savings to go on the vacation. Unfortunately, just found out the mother-in-law has tooth problems and no insurance. I know I'm supposed to feel guilty........okay maybe a little. I'll probably send her at least $1000. What has she ever given me? Ummmm, oh yeah, my wife!

LOL. You leave me an opining for a funny little story....Back when the bill was first passed, I had the honor to attend a gathering of local and national politicans. I was invited to attend this dinner because of the campaign work I had done, believe it or not, for His Higness George W. Bush the year before. Yup, thats right, in the year 2000 I took to the streets and did all I could to get this man elected. At the bright age of 12, I was more than willing to travel throughout the city passing out fliers, attending rallies, talking with people on the subway and the like. I even helped organize student debates at my Junior High School. The same was true in 2004 actually. Only recently have I "changed sides" as my neocon friends like to say lol

Anyway, the topic of No Child Left Behind came up several times with several people. Most had good things to say about it and I myself was excited for it--its no secert schools in NYC have been, shall we say, more destructive than productive for quiet soem tiem now. There was one nincapoop in attentence however. The following is what a US Congressman, who still serves I might add, told me:

"The goal of No Child Left Behind is exactly that--no child in 21st century America should be denied a sound education nor denied the opportunity for a worthwhile career. Furthermore, the congress hopes that by 2010, no student will be in the bottom quartile of their class."

Eliminate the bottom 25% of the class How is that possible? There will always be a bottom 25% no matter what they score! If every student gets a 90 or better, there will still be a bottom quartile

LOL it seems to me that teaching basic math skills to the congress might be a good first step in fixing some of our problems as a nation....maybe then we could *gasp* balance the budget...and maybe we wouldn't even need this $600 to be able to afford eating....

Funny !..Politicians will "always" put their foot in their mouths if given enough time!!
I am sorry to hear that you've left the "good side" and went to the "dark side".......that's too bad, but understandable !
Perhaps you need "Hannitized" !.........(just kiddin')
