I have seen several of these the past few years. It is always at the rim and appears at times to be zinc shavings struck into the surface of the coin. Other times is appears that the surface layer of copper was shaved off before the coin was struck. Below is a similar 2016 P Lincoln. Still Lookin

Sorry it just looks like PMD - but if it were un-plated in those areas it unfortunately is not very appealing to look at (for me).

No kiddin - with all those spots and dings I never would have thought that. You can always put up on ebay there are many people out there who collect coins and this maybe end up being a good seller. I must say I don't really see many with the missing copper plating.

I'm on coin opp on Facebook too. They seem puzzled as well. I'm Kinda hoping Co-op will chime in.

I have seen a few of them but have never tried to sell them or even post about them. One the ones that I have seen the damage to the planchet was done before the coin was struck.

Coincents, Stamping is don on a plated zinc blank. What the OP's coin appears to have is an improperly adhered plating issue. When stamped, the plating stretched until it split while being pressed, exposing thr=e core on these high points. Still looking has the same adherence problem, not sure what it's called...flaking plating? but it too is improper plating issue. Don't ya just love US Gubmint quality control?

Could be the result of some kind or contamination on the zinc blanks that kept the plating from adhering. The result being partially plated planchets. It happens.

Frito-Lay identifies and removes defective potato chips from the line prior to bagging. One has to wonder why the US Mint can't do the same thing with coins.
