I have a 1915 korona and there is a bit of black stuff on it. I gently rubbed with my fingers and it slowly disappears. If I try with water, it will damage the coin?

Have you got a photo? Water shouldn't harm it but if the black marks been there a while you may end up with patchy toning underneath.

Maybe gently with some distilled water. You will almost certainly have uneven toning though. But personally, I'd rather have some uneven toning that black crud on a coin like that.

Rubbing the coin with your fingers will damage it, producing fine scratches called "hairlines". The black stuff is most likely toning/tarnish which will not be removed with water because it is chemically bonded to the coin.

Thank you guys for your answers :) Btw how you can tell if the fine scratches are from the use(back in those days) or "rubbing" it with fingers?

Robert~!!

I bought a jewelry's loupe and studied all kind of coin surfaces to help me with "cleaning" marks.

I'd dab a q-tip in pure acetone and gently wipe it off. Water is an issue because when it dries it will leave a film of mineral deposits on the surface of the coin. Especially if you have "hard water" where you are.
