Hi All,

I've had quite the time today trying to get a picture good enough to show what I'm asking about.. unfortunately, I'm not having the greatest luck. Hopefully I can give the picture and explain well enough.

I have a 1972-S Lincoln Penny that was making my eyes cross every time I looked at the reverse. I don't have the greatest vision, so I didn't think much of it. Now that I've started my so-called 'inventory', however, I took a closer look.. and all the lettering looks slightly doubled. Just slight, not enough to tell at just a glance, but under a lighted 10x you can REALLY tell. So, I tried to get a picture so I could zoom in and tell for sure, but then I couldn't get a picture even half as clear as what I could see in the lighted loupe.

So to make a long story much shorter, here's the best of the pictures and the question: Is there really any doubling on the reverse of this penny, or is it just my eyes? In the picture, it's more obvious on "E PLURIBUS UNUM" but in the 10x loupe it's on all the lettering and the monument. I could not find anything like this in the varieties listed at multiple sites. I've found a boatload with obverse doubling (wow, are THOSE pretty!), but none with reverse doubling.

Thanks so much for everyone's help.. I really appreciate the patient responses, and the explanations go far in helping me understand better.

Hi Xshift,
I really don't see any doubling myself in the photo of the rev. I have trouble also,
but sometimes find that a less bright light allows me to see doubling easier, as a bright direct
light sometimes seems to show the intersection of the field and letter ( or device edge) as a
doubling. If there is any, it is probably Machine Doubling rather than die. Maybe someone else
will see it differently. Even my known double dies look different when I use the loupe ( they are
generally tilted) compared to when they are on the flat stage of my stereo microscope. Probably
just my old worn eyes :)

I can't tell if it's doubling or the way the light is hitting the coin.

I moved the light and cut some of it, and tried again..

I guess if it's this difficult to photograph then it's probably not worth much! :) Thanks..

lol.. At this point, I'm just happy someone else can see it and it's not just my eyes!

If this is true doubling, does anyone know what variety this could be?
