Shapur II imitation
Maybe Kidarite or Hepthalite Huns?
Simple style bust of Shapur II right, Pahlavi or pseudo-Pahlavi legend (Seller says it reads "Vahrn Kushanshah", others maintain it is gibberish)
Fire altar with attendants, obliterated by the obverse strike.
28mm / 3.85g
Ref: Gobl em. 28A

This was a bit of an impulse buy, but I think I got it at a good price. Information is very scant; I have been able to locate only one other example anywhere online:
http://grifterrec.rasmir.com/kidari...idarite.html

At the moment I am taking everything with a grain of salt, but based on the fabric, I think that a Hunnic strike is likely; this near-bracteate style is a calling card of Hun mint workers. Most likely struck in the 4th or 5th century. Presumably very rare?

Anybody who is good with Pahlavi want to take a swing at the legend?

Excellent find Steve, IMO it looks more Kidarite than Hepthalite. The Kidarites put a little more effort in striking their coins than the Hepthalites.

Listen to those crickets chirping in response.

Nice pickup. Grifterrec continues to be such a useful resource, some years now since Tom Mallon's passing. It's a nice legacy he left us with.

You might already have a copy of this, if not you might find this interesting. http://www.diss.fu-berlin.de/diss/s.../01_Text.pdf

It appears that I was wrong, which is not uncommon. But I now believe your coin is Hepthalite after all.

Thanks for that link! Short on time now, but it looks like a good read!

And @Bob, that is one of my go-to references for non-classical Ancients when Zeno and Wildwinds fall short. It is truly an impressive information repository! Regarding the Pahlavi... I might have to ask around online. Tried comparing it to a few alphabet tables, and couldn't even identify one letter. Now I get why so few people bother to transcribe legends that aren't Latin, Greek, or Chinese!
