I picked up a large lot of gold. Found this in it. The seller says he tested it for gold. The weight is spot on- 4.1/4.2 (scale only goes out to one decimal place, but it hovers back and forth.) Obviously, it is a details coin, but is the mint mark original and worn, or is it added? Also what would you estimate it is worth in the condition that it is? TIA

The G$2.5 '11-D strong D is a highly sought after piece worth thousands in any condition. That D does not look like a mint struck D. I suppose there's a chance it was damaged and is genuine but without TPG authentication it has to be considered and added mintmark.

I do not like the eagle's beak nor the weakness of the headdress feathers vs the strength of the D.
Send it to ANACS and find out.

This one looks quite odd. Let me recheck the diagnostics.

I wouldn't chance it myself without TPG. The obverse is especially concerning as I've never seen circulation wear quite like that.

Thanks to all who have shared their opinion. I bought a lot for melt + 3%. I did so because I saw this one I the lot. I knew it may not turn out, but the lot was worth buying at that price any day. As far as the obverse wear - I think this may have been a jewelry piece, polished, ppssibly lacquered..... I guess it goes to ANACS and I will update you all when that happens.

ANACS says: Not genuine. Struck copy. I think they mean to say added mint mark, on a 1911 P.

Quote: ANACS says: Not genuine. Struck copy. I think they mean to say added mint mark, on a 1911 P. I don't believe this is a 1911-P with an added mintmark. ANACS is stating the coin is a Struck Counterfeit meaning it was never a coin, it was produced to look like a G$2.50. It might .900 fine gold though.

@BH1964- I agree that is what it seems ANACS is saying, but I wonder how accurate they describe their rejects. It is struck and it is not genuine. I wonder if they only have a few options for comments. That's all I'm trying to say.... Oh and I already checked before I sent it in. It is .900 gold.

2.5 Indians are the most counterfeited gold series and some are even made on gold. They're probably saying it was one of the fakes struck in the middle east

If it had been a 1911 with an added mintmark they would have said either added mintmark or altered mintmark not "Not genuine struck copy".

Consider yourself lucky that it's indeed a .900 gold. As Basebal says, these coins are among the most counterfeited ones. You paid 3% over the gold value so it's a good deal to get gold.
