I thought this was an interesting item. Keeping score or cheating at cards?

Interesting and still definitely a keeper, but not much more than bullion value, unless a provable numismatic significance can be demonstrated.

Looks like this is what the interior mechanicals looked like. Apparently it was used to keep track of tricks in whist and bridge, the card games. Prior to these mechanical devices, people used chips as counters for tricks.

I don't mean to be mean or anything, but this coin is probably worth more than one without the modification.

If numismatic student's theory is correct, then certainly this would be the case.

It does seem difficult to imagine such a spinning device inside this coin, but perhaps a view of the edge would be helpful.

My question would be - why hollow out a coin for this purpose, rather than building it from scratch?

It's a truly unusual piece. I'd love one of those in my TD collection and sure pay a lot more than bullion.

Maybe if the mechanics were missing and all you had was the machined coin - but as a whole I'm sure (like others have stated) there would be quite a market for that piece.

Cool piece @ns! I see that a patent was applied for this device. In a quick search, I don't see any card counting devices specifically meant to be incorporated into a silver dollar, although the need for being surreptitious is mentioned in more than one place. Here are a couple which are reasonably close to this piece:

Perhaps I was a little harsh; it IS after all a Trade dollar, and if it were mine, I would be certainly be keeping it.
