It's about a quarter in size and seems to be made of silver. Any help would be appreciated in identifying what it is, its age and value. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Translation - "GAS LIGHTING ORLEANS PLANTS". You may want to see where that takes you.

Jetons were originally made for use as counters for monetary transactions. In the late 18th through mid-20th centuries they were produced as proof of membership in certain organizations and/or requisite for attendance at certain meetings (referred to as jetons de presence). Something like a ticket or pass card. As is human nature, many of them were kept as collectibles. I could not find detailed information about the purpose of its manufacture, but these octagonal jetons were popular in the mid to late 1800s. This one appears to be promoting gas for lighting and factory use in Orleans, France. As to particulars, there may be clues on the edge. A photo of the edge would be ideal, but otherwise look for a symbol and word or partial word next to it. It should have an image of a pointing hand, bee, cornucopia, or other marking followed by the word ARGENT or similar. Based on that marking we can tell the date range when it was struck. This assumes it originates at the Paris mint. Post what you find and we can go from there. Thanks for posting it!

I can't quite make out the edge mark next to ARGENT, but I suspect that it's the Cornucopia or Horn of Plenty which would indicate that your piece was struck by Monnaie de Paris, the state mint.
