For those of you who have been silver hunting half-dollars for more than 5 years....
Have you seen an observable drop-off (decrease) in the amount of silver you have found on a regular basis now, as compared to say, 5 years ago?
I've only recently begun silver hunting, and would love your opinion!
Seems like word has been spreading like wildfire with social media and youtube tutorials on silver hunting.... and any smart human being would take full advantage of nabbing free silver.

I think the word "abundance" is hyperbolic. Most of the "social media and youtube tutorials" simply show the good scores, and not the hours of going through clad coinage.

I agree. The silver is out there, but you will have to put forth the effort. Maybe even a lot of effort.

Take the lowest minimum wage job and with that meager sum you can buy two or three times the amount of silver you would find in the same time period searching rolls.
Buy lottery tickets if you want to gamble.

There will always be some, stupid relatives are in abundance. The "greatest generation" has pretty much died off, that dump of coins has pretty much ended. The next era, "baby boomers"" are starting to die off now with their idiot progeny bank dumping their collected coins for the cash. It really stinks, but the one thing mankind will never lack from is an overabundance of dunces!  |

...appreciate the input guys.
I've been relatively shocked at the amount of silver I've seen so far (as in way more than I was expecting) -- so I just got to thinking if there is still this much now, I wondered if previously there was a lot more.
That's all. I'm not trying to make a huge income, I was just curious if you all felt the amount of silver had decreased noticeably in the last handful of years. No one really answered the question I was specifically asking... lol

The important part is if you have fun. If you are finding more than expected, then I'd guess you are pretty happy.

You have to truly love coin hunting, because it's only a hobby, not a money maker. I've been roll hunting since about 1978. I've always said we find more silver now than we did back then. $50 silver in 1980, interest rates 20%, high unemployment, lots of roll hunters, no internet.
I started back up around 2008 and the finds weren't bad, before that we threw back 40% halves, they weren't worth more than face value. For me, things started to dry up about 2011 when silver approached $50 again. Prices fell and collections slowly get dumped back into circulation. I really miss the hobby, but the dismal finds just aren't worth it.

 Nomad...and yes, with every ones that are found that's less out there to be discovered. But there will always be "stupid relatives" supplying fresh inventory. |

I assume that most of the silver remaining in rolls, especially halves, are a result of collection dumping.
I suspect (but do not know) that during the 2008-2010 financial situation that resulted in the return of a lot of saved coins to circulation (part of the reasoning behind the lower mintage figures in 2009) may also have resulted in an increase of collection dumping.
Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge of whether there was a noticeable increase on silver hauls for roll hunters in the 2008-2010 time frame?

@n9jig - yes there was. I've been on roll hunting forums since 2008, and examples of huge hauls back then are well documented. Managers at some banks were ordering boxes of halves and keeping only the 90%. I have spoken to some managers that say those boxes were half full of 40%, of which they did not keep.

I regularly get boxes of halves in the Detroit area. Out of maybe 6000 coins, I found 1 1969. Then last week I picked up $120 of customer rolled halves and found 25 silver, 6 of which were 90%'ers.

I did a $2000 search a few days ago and found:

My best coin hunt was actually dumped into my lap. I asked a Wells Fargo teller if he had halves, and he handed me a roll that someone had just given him. To my surprise, most were 40%, some were 90%. All in all, I got silver on all coins in that roll of halves, but 4. My best source for finding silver coins are those green coin machines..they spit out silver dimes,quarters,and Kennedy halves. |

I enjoy the hunt for silver and the conversations while hunting. I almost never hunt alone! I usually open the rolls, stack the coins, and watch the kids hunt. I tell stories, ask about their day, homework, etc. It is an awesome experience. They keep anything they find. So, it's a win-win for them. A skunk box is a great learning experience for a kid. BTW, production is less than it was. But, hunting is just as fun!
