I acquired this coin and then noticed the extra metal over the V in VI. I wondered if this was a mint error or PMD. While taking the pictures I noticed the line in the king's hair below the part line and wondered if this is a die crack or a scratch.
I looked at errors on the Coins and Canada site but didn't find any matches.
I have very limited experience in error coins and would like to know the thoughts of those with knowledge of the subject.
Thanks for any help you can give.

The line on his head sure looks like a die crack - but the extra metal looks like the rim took a hit and the metal was pushed onto the field. You notice how the rim in that area looks a different color and seems to be a void there.

Thanks. I see what you mean about the different colour and the depression. I just wondered as the accumulation of metal seemed different than I thought a hit would make. Are such die cracks unusual?

They aren't that common and that one is a long one so it's collectible. But, don't quit your day job

Is the 'die crack' raised or indented?

Looks like a scratch to me...

Raised. Looks like a crack at the bottom of his neck too. Easier to see under magnification.

Kinda like this:

It does not appear to be extra metal to me.

All of the metal which a coin has,
has to be provided by the planchet before it goes to the coining press.
The small blob of metal near the 'V' in this case has been displaced from the adjacent gouge.
The result of PMD.

Sometimes, evidence of fine die cracks left on a coin show up as leaving some doubt in the mind of the viewer if there is a ridge (indicating a die crack) or just a scratch on the coin.

To confirm if a die crack or scratch, it is best to take two pictures, with light coming from greatly different angles.

One year type, and only 3.4 million minted.
For a Canadian type collector, tombac beavers are quite difficult to find outside Canada, especially so in MS grades.

Thanks for the responses. I believe the cracks are raised. I tried to take pictures using advice from Sel 691 but don't think I have the technique yet.
I've attached pictures of both the upper and lower lines with different lighting.

To my eye, die cracks now confirmed.

Thanks for the extra pictures.
