For lack of a better place, I'll post this here. So has anyone else noticed odd trends with the post office in shipping coins? Here's a few zingers I've seen in the last few months: Coins I ship back east from California often take 2+ weeks to arrive. JBuck--have you ever received your contest prize? However, the same package I send to Canada will often take less time--and always for less postage! Now I'm advised that after May 12, postage to Canada will roughly double. The self-service kiosk is confusing and often calculates the wrong rate from lack of shipping parameters. I say this because packages have been returned with "postage due" At the desk, I've had to correct clerks on postage--either charging too much or too little. All the rates have been removed from signage at the post office, which makes it impossible to confirm the rates clerks quote you. Today, a clerk actually charged me more on a bubble mailer because it was "too thin". However, just the other day...they charged me an extra 0.50 because it was 1/8" "too thick". The differences have been negligible. Yep, this is a rant. What an opaque, byzantine process! Not the way I would run a business, and if this continues it does not bode well for shipping coins to other collectors. Edited by KurtS 04/28/2008 3:31 pm

And in our local post office they have removed all clocks, and the doorkeeper at 4:30 acts like a bouncer at a club. Of course, he has the correct timex time.

In a two week period last year I had 4 packages sent to people "lost in the mail".
I made the mistake on three of the four of putting them in envelopes that had green triangles on them, but I did not sent them "first class" Instead of returning them to me or the buyer, I guess they decided to just keep them.
The fourth was my favorite. The label came back to me cut from the package as if by scissors with a note from the post office.
"your label has been separated from the package during shipping. Sorry for the inconvenience."
Luckily these were books and not coins, but it always causes me to worry when an item is delayed in shipping.

That's rather scary...what in the blazes is going on? Perhaps online venues like ebay have increased visibility on items that untrustworthy workers can pilfer? However, I've always assumed the US had a more secure postal system?! As it stands, we're now paying more money for lesser service...I need a better option.

Funny you mention this. My first ever shipment of coins last week was strange. I use Stamps.com and print all of my postage in my office, and use the USPS for most of my shipping. I weighed the package, chose the shipping, ins, etc. and printed my postage as I normally do. When I got to the PO the guy behind the counter, who I know well, looked at it and asked me if the package was insured (huge postage tipped him off). When I print postage from Stamps.com "insured" is printed onto the label, but this time it wasn't. I told him how much I insured it for and when he rang it through his system the numbers didn't match up. He couldn't figure out why the combination of insurance and the package size and weight didn't match to what I came up with. I know I did my end right as he chose all the same options as I did and came up with the same weight too.

Hello Jerry.... I use our wonderful Post Office almost daily between trading coins and selling LEGO through the 'net (you wouldn't believe how much money these old things can be wroth) and have thought long and hard on the subject. I have come to a conclusion....it makes no sense what-so-ever. Everything about it is a bunch of BS. You know I sent a package about 2 hours ago to Finland and a check to my bank in the City and it cost me $1.07 Last week, I sent a envelope to Washington State and it cost more than $2...it is honestly one of the worst run businesses I've ever come across. If it wasn't a Federal company, it would have shut its doors a hundred years ago

While we're ranting on the post office, I have a question. Do you ever go in and they ask you what you're mailing?
When I mail stuff at the University PO there's one girl who asks people what they're mailing. It's only happened to me once but I've heard her ask other people too. I don't think it's any of her business.

next time they ask what your sending just tell them a little paper a little plastic and a little metal. LOL no I don't think its any of their business. They have a right to ask if your sending liquid, flammables, or living plants/animals. Especially if your sending overseas but what exactly I am sending I shall not tell

I stuck to telling them that I was sending "hobby supplies" which is what it said on the customs sheet.
